Embrace change
As a good Dutchman, I was cycling before I could walk. Mountainbiking was always one of my passions where I loved the single tracks in Belgium and the Netherlands. It emptied my mind and I loved it to exercise in the nature, finding the most beautiful spots here around my living area.
February 19th 2019 my life changed, I got diagnosed with cancer and before I knew I had to amputate my right lower leg. Instead of being knocked out by it, I embraced my change and called the 19th “the first day of my new life”. During rehab I got asked to participate in the famous Handbike Battle in Austria, 20km and 1000 height meters, with a bike you push forward with your arms. 120 cyclers were practicing for a long time to ride this challenge, and I got 1.5 month…
In 2 hours and 16 seconds I crossed the finish line, which gave me the 2nd rank! From this moment onwards handbiking was my life. Ever since I cycle 3-4 days a week and you can find me in the cross-fit for the other 3 days. Only 8 months after my surgery I got pre-selected by TeamNL to ride in Orange! Main focus, main dream: Paralympics 2024!
